Turquoise and gold Atlantic resort goes green
With its green-gold vineyards and shimmering turquise coves, Torres Vedras gets global top100 sustainable destination award
Since the middle ages, Torres Vedras has represented a priceless jewel on the Atlantic coast, close to Lisbon. Once clusters of fortresses – the Lines of Torres Vedras -repelled would-be invaders.
Today, Torres is a far more peaceful proposition. Surfers bring their boards to the glittering beaches, and revel in sandy seclusion while foodies flock to try the great local delicacies and superb wines. The landscape is now simply a lovely place to relax. Here visitors enjoy a treat for the eyes – a colourful tapestry of green-gold vineyards, shimmering turquoise coves, golden sand dunes and windmill-topped hills.
Visitors can enjoy superb walks over the lovely hills and beside the sea, take great picnics of local delicacies such as the "pastel de feijão" and naturally a glass or two of the rich red wine or the fruity white, the lovely scenery makes it all taste even more delicious.
They can join in the wildly superb historic local Torres Vedras carnival with large-scale allegorical floats, groups of masked revellers, typical figures wearing large carved heads, giant figures, and Zés Pereiras drumming groups, with traditional drums and accordions It involves six days of festivities including floats and lively Zés Pereiras drumming groups.
Above all, historic Torres Vedras is a beautiful delicate area and the local municipality takes great care to keep it so. It protects and promotes biodiversity and puts efforts in increasing soft mobility opportunities.
Torres Vedras also thinks raising sustainable awareness of cultural, social, economic and environmental issues among its citizens and visitors is important. That’s why they opened the Environmental Education Center.
Everyone is working together to reducing water consumption, improving water losses, reusing treated wastewater and using rainwater for irrigation and many other sustainable issues.
Their efforts were already recognized by European Green Leaf award and now by being rated one of the world’s top100 sustainable destinations. But more importantly they are creating a lovely place to visit and a great place to live for this and future generations.
