Twin sisters drown after freak wave at Cabo San Lucas
Twin sisters, one a former travel agent, have drowned after being washed out to sea by a freak wave while vacationing in Mexico.
Retired 67-year old sisters Beverly Skripsky and Barbara Thomas were washed into the ocean by a sudden wave during a morning stroll in Cabo San Lucas.
It is the second such incident just days apart after 65-year old Steven Urycki was swept into the ocean by a strong wave and drowned while fishing.
Over the years several tourists and residents have drowned under similar circumstances.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico had posted warnings cautioning travelers on Cabo beaches.
It says some beaches known for hazardous waves are not clearly marked as such.
"Swimmers, waders and even people simply walking along the beaches have been washed into the ocean by rogue waves. Some have drowned and others have disappeared. Strong currents could lead to dangerous conditions for even the most experienced swimmers."
According to U.S. State Department data, five Americans drowned in Baja California Sur last year.
