Uber drivers bag USD 50 million since in-app tipping launched

Uber drivers are on track to pocket $50 million in tips since the ride hailing service rolled out an in-app tipping function recently.

In-app tipping was launched across the country just a few weeks ago after a short trial in a few cities.

It was launched as part of Uber’s ‘180 Days of Change’ program to improve conditions for drivers and reduce turnover.

Other improvements which have since been introduced for drivers include long trip notifications and an increase in the number of driver destinations.

"This week, we’re going to hit $50 million dollars in tips for drivers. We launched the tipping effort in three cities two months ago, but we didn’t roll it out all over the U.S. until the middle of July. So we’re really, really excited to see how well that feature has done in just a short period of time," Rachel Holt, Uber’s regional general manager for U.S. and Canada told TechCrunch.

Rival Lyft has allowed driver tipping since the service began back in 2012.
