Uber riders in Malaysia may soon have the option to pay with cash.
Uber’s South Asia head of communications Karun Arya said it is pondering a cash payment option for Malaysia.
"We know that Malaysia is just another one of those markets where cash is a dominant mode of payment," Arya told The Star.
It’s definitely a possibility. It’s one of the 50 other things we’re looking at strongly for Malaysia."
Arya cited India as a major marketplace where Uber has reacted to special market conditions.
"There are a billion plus people in India and there are 908 million that use cash. So you can’t tap into the potential without localising the product for that market," he said.
Uber’s Malaysia general manager Leon Foong estimates about 40% of Malaysian’s use credit or debit cards.
Uber’s biggest Malaysian rival Grab, formerly known as GrabTaxi, already offers a cash option for users.
