Uber offering world’s first underwater ride-share on Great Barrier Reef
Tropical North Queensland is getting an Uber ride sharing service with a difference.
It is being touted as the world’s first ride-share submarine, offering riders the chance to deep dive into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Aptly named scUber, the sub ride is for a limited time only and bookable through the Uber app for trips from May 27 through June 18.
Uber has partnered with Queensland to market the unique service.

It will take riders down 98 feet below the surface starting at Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef area and heads north to Quicksilver Cruises’ Agincourt Reef Platform, a viewing platform and underwater observatory.
The experience costs A$3,000 for two and includes a scenic helicopter ride to the submarine location and half day snorkel and tour of the Great Barrier Reef.
"In late 2018, consumer research identified that exploring the Great Barrier Reef in a submarine was the most desired future travel experience sought by visitors. scUber makes this wish a reality," said Tourism and Events Queensland’s CEO, Leanne Coddington.
The project also hopes to raise awareness of conservation issues at the reef and Uber is donating $68,000 to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef to fund its ongoing preservation initiatives.
"By partnering with Citizens we can work together to raise awareness about the protection and conservation of this global icon," said Susan Anderson, regional general manager of Uber for Australia and New Zealand.
