UK airport staff halt strikes
Staff at BAA airports have called off Thursday’s strikes while they vote on a pay offer.
Up to 5,000 members of The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), including security staff, airport firefighters and maintenace staff, were involved in the dispute over pay. If strikes go ahead it could cause severe disruptions to flights at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow airports.
If the TGWU members accept the pay offer further strike action, planned for 2, 10, and 15 December, will be called off. The new pay offer provides an average increase of seven percent.
BAA director Tony Ward said: “We are pleased that the TGWU has called off strike action in order to put this significantly improved offer to its members. We are confident that our staff, most of whom do not want to strike, will recognise that the company has responded to their concerns and see this as a fair offer in the circumstances.”
Discussions with Amicus, the other union proposing strike action, continues.
