UK airport traffic returns to 2000 levels
Air traffic in the UK’s airports during September has clawed back to 2000 levels.
BAA’s UK airports handled 12.1 million passengers in September. This is a significant increase of 8.1 percent from the previous year, when the terrorist attacks of September 11 distorted figures, but only a small increase on September 2000, when a total of 12 million passengers passed through BAA’s airports.
September traffic was boosted by increased domestic and European scheduled traffic, which increased 13.3 percent and 7.8 percent respectively. BAA attributes this to the fierce competition between no-frills and traditional scheduled carriers, which pushed fares down, and prompted more air travel.
Stansted Airport saw the greatest increase in traffic of all the UK airports, continuing its persistent growth over the past two years. In September this year, passenger traffic was up 13.7 percent from September 2001, to 1.53 million passengers. Looking back, September 2001 was 11.4 percent up year-on-year, and September 2000 was up 25.2 percent. A spokesperson for the airport told TravelMole: “The growth in passenger numbers is really just down to the growth of the low-cost carriers”.
Passengers numbers at Gatwick were 0.4 percent ahead of September 2001, its best performance since September 11. This was anticipated by a spokesperson from the airport, who told TravelMole last week, that he was optimistic about figures for September. However, the most telling figures will be passenger numbers in the coming months, and into next year, which will demonstrate whether Gatwick can meet its target to get back on track by next summer.
