The UK government will arrange emergency charter flights to get British tourists home who are stranded in hurricane hit Jamaica.
An estimated 8,000 UK nationals are currently in Jamaica.
The Foreign Office is urging Brits to register online to receive updates on the Hurricane Melissa situation.
Airports on Jamaica were expected to reopen by today.
As well as a limited number of special charter flights, the Foreign Office says it is working with tour operators and airlines to get services restarted as soon as is safe to do so.
All Brits in Jamaica who have registered will be contacted and given a link to book flights home once airport operations resume.
The UK government also announced emergency humanitarian aid.
A Royal navy ship is also in the region and is placed on standby.
Foreign secretary Yvette Cooper said: “The UK government is chartering flights to bolster commercial capacity and ensure people who wish to return to the UK can do so as soon as possible.”
The US National Hurricane Centre confirmed Melissa as ‘one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic basin.’
