Unions vow to challenge Ryanair
Ireland: GMB reacts angrily to carrier’s plans for Buzz workers
Unions are lining up to condemn Ryanair after it declared its plans to lay off workers at its no-frills rival Buzz after taking the company over.
As reported by News From Abroad yesterday, Ryanair confirmed that it is to implement massive cutbacks at Buzz, cutting back severely in terms of the fleet and the number of destinations it serves – and angered unions by stating that it intends to lay off 400 of the 600 Buzz staff. It has also cancelled all of Buzz’s flights in April, leaving thousands of travellers in the lurch.
Ryanair famously does not recognise any unions, but its boss Michael O’Leary is reported to have told union leaders that unless they agree to the carrier’s plans, the whole of Buzz will be closed down. Ryanair claims Buzz is losing upwards of £600,000 a week.
Unions say Ryanair could well be breaking EU directives, and have promised to fight the carrier’s proposals. A GMB spokesman told The Guardian: “It is quite outrageous that in the 21st century, in a country such as Britain, that my members should be told they are being made redundant in a press release. We will be going to see our barristers on Monday.”
