United Airlines hit with FAA fine

United Airlines is facing a hefty FAA fine for ignoring fire safety checks on planes.

The agency proposed a $1.15 million fine.

The FAA says United operated Boeing 777 flights with the fire system warning check removed.

It operated more than 100,000 flights like this between June 2018 and April 2021.

“Removal of the check meant the aircraft did not meet airworthiness requirements,” the FAA said.

United argued it had changed its pre-flight checks “to account for redundant built-in checks performed automatically by the 777″.

The airline claimed the agency was informed of this in 2018.

“Safety of our flights was never in question,” United said.

It will ‘review and respond accordingly’ to the proposed fine.
