United Airlines to diversify pilot workforce
United Airlines wants to shift its pilot ranks away from a predominantly white, male workforce. It is pledging to diversify the cockpit with a goal of training 5,000 new pilots by 2030. Half of these will be women and people of color, the airline says.
It is now accepting applications on the United Aviate Academy website. All gaduates will be offered a guaranteed job. Minority aviation industry groups including the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, Sisters of the Skies, the Latino Pilots Association and the Professional Asian Pilots Association will be involved in screening candidates.
United is the only major US airline to own its own flight school.
