United gives kids a Christmas treat

Thursday, 3 December 20093 min read

SYDNEY – United Airlines flight UA839 carried 55 children and carers from Autism Spectrum Australia – the nation’s largest not-for profit autism specific service provider – on a Christmas Fantasy Flight from Sydney on Tuesday.

Chris Petty, UA sales manager Australia and New Zealand, said the airline was privileged to support Autism Spectrum Australia.

“Children with autism usually love and are fascinated by anything to do with transport and it is a common teaching technique to use objects that the children are interested in as a learning tool.

“Having the capacity to provide these children with an exciting and stimulating experience is a very rewarding way in which United can give back to the community in which we operate,” Petty said.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, the children and their carers were treated to a tea party, hosted by Bob the Builder and with an appearance from Father Christmas.

Sarah Pieters of Autism Spectrum Australia said: “At Autism Spectrum Australia we continuously look for ways to build confidence and development within our students and their families.

“We are truly grateful for this opportunity which United Airlines, their staff and their suppliers have made possible.”

United Airlines staff across all departments including sales, customer service, maintenance, cargo and crew assisted with the trip, including financial support to cover airport taxes and gifts for each child.
