United Airlines will offer buy-out packages of up to $100,000 for flight attendants as it looks to cut cabin crew numbers and recall flight attendants on furlough.
The six-figure pay-off for the Enhanced Early Out Program will be given based on seniority for those that meet certain eligibility, the airline said.
United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said the airline plans to offer 2,100 flight attendants early severance packages over the next two years.
The lay-offs will have no impact on flight operations, McCarthy said
United currently has 1,450 flight attendants on voluntary and enforced furlough who will all be recalled.
"We’re excited to offer this extraordinary early out program, and we look forward to rewarding Flight Attendants who’ve contributed so much to United over the years," said Sam Risoli, United’s SVP, inflight services.
The Association of Flight Attendants which represents cabin crew hailed the agreement with United.
"Today’s historic announcement between AFA and management provides real options for flight attendants and a substantial commitment on the part of the airline to promote operational integration that recognizes the efforts of flight attendants," the AFA said.
United currently employs more than 23,000 flight attendants.
