United Airlines is returning to New York’s JFK International Airport after a five year absence.
It will start flying from JFK again on 1 February with daily transcontinental flights to the West Coast.
It will operate two flights a day each to San Francisco and Los Angeles on Boeing 767 aircraft with 46 business class seats.
United’s JFK service will operate out of Terminal 7.
United pulled out of JFK in October 2015 amid intense competition, to consolidate its services at main hub Newark.
Now it believes the time is right to try again with the iindustry upended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"This is an opportunity for us to attract some new customers and give those customers who prefer JFK the opportunity to try somebody different," United’s Chief Communications Officer, Josh Earnest, said.
"The more people that experience air travel amidst the pandemic, and see all of the things that we’re doing to keep them safe, it gives them more confidence to travel," he said.
Earnest told reporters he expects the Thanksgiving holidays to be the busiest week so far for travel since the pandemic.
