Universal halts construction on new Epic Universe park
Construction of Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park has ground to a halt.
The halt to work on the new Epic Universe park was officially confirmed during Comcast’s quarterly earnings report.
It had been slated to open in 2023 but now the timeline is unclear with an indefinite pause.
Work will resume when ‘the future becomes more certain’ Comcast said.
Universal Parks & Resorts saw a 94% revenue decline during the second quarter due to a long closure because of the pandemic.
"While attendance in both locations is much lower than our typical summer levels, we are still doing better financially than if we were closed," said NBC Universal CEO Jeff Shell.
"As is typical in past downturns, the road back will be gradual and bumpy. In the meantime, we are continually adjusting our cost base and capital spend, including pausing development of our Epic Universe project."
Universal Orlando Resort reopened in June after the temporary closure due to Covid-19.
Universal Studios Hollywood is still closed, and the company has not yet announced a planned reopening date.
Universal resumed construction of its Beijing park in April, and it remains on track to open in mid-2021.
