UPDATED: 8,000 flee Gran Canaria wildfires
Around 8,000 people have been evacuated in Gran Canaria as wildfires rip through the holiday island.
With temperature set to rise today, authorities have warned it could take days for the blaze to be brought under control.
They say the fire, which has spread to the mountainous Cruz de Tejeda region, is ‘extremely fierce’ and ‘unstable’.
It is heading towards Gran Canaria’s Tamadaba natural park, home to some of the island’s oldest pine forests.
An emergency has been declared for the cities of Moya and Tejeda.
Hundreds of people were evacuated in separate wildfires on the island last week, forcing the evacuation of 1,000 people.
