UPDATED: Tsunami alert after quake hits Japan

Friday, 7 December 20123 min read

A tsunami alert was issued earlier today after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s north-eastern coast.

A one-metre wave hit Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture and afterwards the tsunami alerts were cancelled.

The force of the earthquake was felt in its capital Tokyo, causing buildings to shake violently.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had issued a tsunami alert for the coastal region within 100km of the earthquake epicentre, which was about 245km south-east of Kamiashi.

It warned authorities to take the appropriate action.

There have been no reports of deaths, injuries or serious damage.

A massive tsunami struck Japan in March 2011 after a 9.0 magnitude quake.

It left more than 15,000 people dead, with more than 3,200 missing, and caused a radiation leak at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
