US air fares rising despite lower fuel prices

Despite falling fuel prices, US airlines have hiked airfares, signaling there a still strong demand for air travel despite Ebola fears.

Rick Seaney, of FareCompare.com said fares were raised about $4 round trip on many domestic routes.

Delta Air Lines began raising fares late last week which has been matched industry-wide by United, American Airlines, Southwest and US Airways.

Oil prices have been on a downward spiral in recent weeks, to $81.94 a barrel as of yesterday.

"Savings on jet fuel from recent oil price drops are not being passed along to passengers,” Seaney said.

"Ebola fears do not appear to be hurting demand for flights and the news about the end of the quarantine period for dozens of Texans with no new infections may continue to calm lingering fears.”

Seaney said there have been numerous attempts to raise base fares this year but carriers are wary of overstepping the mark.

"Filling empty middle seats requires discounting, especially on low demand days,’ he said.
