US-Canada border restrictions extended to September

Saturday, 17 Aug, 2020 0

As expected, the US and Canada will keep the shared border closed for another month into September.

The current extension of the cross-border restrictions expires later this week and has been extended until at least 21 September.

"We are extending the reciprocal restrictions for another 30 days. We will continue to do what’s necessary to keep our communities safe," tweeted Canada’s Public Safety Minister Bill Blair.

The agreement allows trade movements between the countries as well as the flow of essential workers such as healthcare professionals.

However it bans travel for tourism purposes.

Canada recently moved to remedy the ‘Alaska Loophole.’

More than a dozen American citizens have been fined for taking side trips for tourism when traveling by land through Canada to Alaska.

They now must enter Canada at one of only five approved border crossings and take the most direct route.

They are also required only to stop for food at drive-thru restaurants on the way.
