US intelligence ‘jumping at shadows’
Pilots have accused intelligence officials of “jumping at shadows” following the cancellation of two more British Airways flights yesterday. As reported by News From Abroad, the carrier yesterday cancelled Sunday’s flight 223 to Washington and Monday’s BA263 service to Riyadh “on government advice for security reasons”; the BA 223 has now been cancelled five times in recent weeks. According to The Guardian newspaper, the pilots’ union Balpa has now “lost patience” with the situation. The organisation’s general secretary Jim McAuslan reportedly said: “We believe the US intelligence service is jumping at shadows – they are taking bits of intelligence and letting their imaginations run riot. “There has been paranoia since 11 September. They didn’t foresee the twin towers tragedy and with a presidential election looming they do not want to be caught out again. They are jumpy.” Chris Yates, aviation security editor at Jane’s, reportedly added: “There is a feeling that the intelligence which is being put out has not been through all the filters it should go through.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad
