US tourist dies in fall from Bagan temple
A young American tourist has died after falling to her death from a Myanmar temple.
Kassandra Braun, 20, fell from a 20-foot pagoda while watching the sunset over Bagan, and died en route to hospital, a statement from the home affairs ministry said.
She suffered head trauma in the fall off Wuttanathaw Pagoda, one of 2,000 temples in the city, which is one of the country’s premier tourist destinations.
Last year authorities banned climbing at all but five main temples in the Bagan Archaeological Zone for safety reasons and to protect the structures, many of which were damaged after an earthquake.
However oversight of this was lax and tourists have continued to climb them, and Wuttanathaw Pagoda was not one of the five permitted temples.
Braun was visiting Myanmar during a study abroad trip.
