Vaccine passports to stay for ‘foreseeable future’

Vaccine passports won’t be disappearing anytime soon, says transport secretary Grant Shapps.

They will be needed for international travel for a long time to come.

"I do see this becoming a permanent, for the foreseeable future, fixture of international travel," Shapps said.

I’ve chaired meetings with my transport equivalents [from other countries] when I speak to them it’s quite clear that double vaccination will be a requirement, we’re already seeing it in virtually every country in the world."

He urged younger people not yet vaccinated that overseas travel options will be severely diminished if they don’t get double-jabbed.

"If you haven’t got your vaccination yet, please get it, unless you’re medically exempt, you will need it in order to be able to travel in the future," he added.

Shapps also said further reviews of the traffic light system will take place every three weeks instead of weekly to give people more certainty about where they can go on holiday.

"We want people to be able to go away, enjoy a well-earned break and know that this is the system we have in place, bar any unforeseen circumstances, for the rest of August."

Options have expanded for green list holidays with Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania and Norway added this week.

It takes effect from 4.00 am on Sunday 8 August.
