Venice cuts cruise numbers

Wednesday, 6 November 20133 min read

The Italian government is to limit the size and number of cruise ships to Venice from early next year.

From January 2014, the number of cruise ships allowed through Venice will be cut by 20%, and from November 2014 ships of more than 96,000 tonnes will be banned from its centre.

The government is responding to environmentalists who say the ships damage the city’s fragile lagoon, and the huge vessels are out of keeping with the city, the BBC reports.

However, the move is not popular among everyone as many traders rely on cruiselines to bring in extra business.
