Low cost carrier Vietjet is launching domestic flights in Thailand after unveiling three new routes.
Vietjet;s Thai unit will serve Phuket and Chiang Mai from Bangkok and also begin flying from Chiang Rai to Phuket.
Services will commence later this month.
The airline already flies to Bangkok from its hubs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
"Vietjet’s decision to invest in the future of Thai air travel with a dedicated domestic presence is a big market movement. It brings additional capacity to the low-cost flight sector in Thailand," said Thailand’s tourism and sports minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.
"We have an ongoing commitment to improving bilateral relations between Thailand and Vietnam, and so this recent development gives a welcome boost to those efforts."
VietJet vice president Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said the airline plans to expand futher in the Land of Smiles with more international services including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China and Japan.
The fast growing airline this week announced an order with Airbus for 20 more A321 planes worth about US$2.39 billion.
