Violence hits two top destinations
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its advice for Jamaica after thousands of people took part in violent street demonstrations last week.
The Daily Telegraph reports that some 4,000 people took part in the demonstrations in the resort town of Montego Bay, and that crowds blocked the main route to the resort’s Sangsters International Airport as well as setting alight two (empty) tour buses. Several hotels advised guests not to go out on to the streets.
The Telegraph reports that no foreigners were hurt, but that several resorts chose to take their guests to the airport by boat to avoid the demonstrations. The FCO website, at www.fco.gov.uk/travel, states: “An incident over the weekend of 25/26 October in Flankers, Montego Bay (adjacent to Sangsters International Airport) prompted widespread demonstrations amongst the local community in the area. The demonstrations resulted in some inconvenience for tourists who had to travel by alternative routes between hotels/resorts and the airport.”
Meanwhile, the dangers of the city of Rio de Janeiro have been brought into sharp focus with the news that a group of teenagers were executed by armed gangs after their taxi took a wrong turning and ended up in a slum area. At least six, were killed and eight were kidnapped, while several including the driver escaped.
The Times reports that the incident “has shocked even the violence-hardened inhabitants of the beachside city, one of the most crime-ridden in the world”.
