Finally, after weeks of campaigning there is an official winner for the much coveted flight slots at Dallas Love Field airport.
As expected, Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez announced the two slots would be handed to Virgin America.
It brings an end to weeks of combative campaigning by the three airlines in the running – Virgin America, Dallas-based Southwest and Delta Air Lines.
With the slots, subleased from American Airlines under the terms of its merger with US Airways, Virgin America will add four daily round-trip flights from Dallas to New York La Guardia and three to Washington Reagan National.
It will also move existing Los Angeles and San Francisco flights from Dallas/Fort Worth to Love Field.
"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to bring new competition to Love Field, an important airport for travelers because of its proximity to the city’s central business district," said Virgin America CEO David Cush.
Virgin America also hopes to fly from Dallas Love Field to Chicago O’Hare, another airport with divested flights slots up for grabs.
