Virgin Australia revamps frequent flyer redemption

Wednesday, 2 March 20163 min read
Virgin Australia is tweaking its Velocity frequent flyer scheme for the first time in five years.
Changes to redemption values means more points are needed to book reward tickets on some routes with specific airline partners.
However many airline partner flights on some longer routes will require fewer mileage points than at present.
Slightly more points are required to book premium economy and business class flights on the services of all Virgin group airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Business class flights via Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Airberlin, SilkAir, Hawaiian Airlines and South African Airways will generally need fewer points than at present, Virgin said.
"These are the first changes that have been made to the points expiry period or the reward seats points tables since they were introduced to the programme more than five years ago," Virgin said.
"During this time Virgin Australia has undergone significant changes to become a full service airline, providing all guests with a complimentary checked baggage allowance, in-flight entertainment, food and beverages."
Velocity points will now expire in two years if there is no activity on a member account, compared to the present validity of three years, Virgin said.
This and all the other changes will take effect on March 1.
