Virgin Australia is touting itself as the only Australian airline to offer Wi-Fi connectivity on international flights.
It said trials of Gogo’s 2Ku system on a Boeing 737 jet was a success, and that will lead to a wider rollout starting from October.
Virgin stated more than three-quarters of passengers experienced a ‘high level of satisfaction’ with the in-flight Wi-Fi service.
Virgin is targeting for all of its 777-300ERs and most of its 737s to be Wi-Fi ready by the end of 2018.
Then connectivity will be installed on the airline’s Airbus fleet by the second half of 2019.
Virgin group chief executive John Borghetti said 90% of its fleet will be Wi-Fi enabled by then.
"Virgin Australia will offer a base level of free Wi-Fi to all of our guests on domestic flights and become the only Australian airline to offer Wi-Fi on international flights," he said.
International Wi-Fi service will not be free, while on domestic flights, passengers can choose the free option or upgrade to a speedier paid-for service.
Rival Qantas is also rolling out Wi-Fi but only on its domestic fleet.
