Richard Branson wants to bring high speed hyperloop travel to India

Virgin Hyperloop One is seeking to build a test track for a proposed Hyperloop service linking the Maharashtra cities of Mumbai and Pune.

Virgin says hyperloop speeds could reduce the current train journey of more than three hours to only 25 minutes.

"I believe Virgin Hyperloop One could have the same impact upon India in the 21st century as trains did in the 20th century," Branson said in a release.

"The Pune-Mumbai route is an ideal first corridor as part of a national hyperloop network that will dramatically reduce travel times between most of India’s major cities to under two hours."

A preliminary agreement with Maharashtra’s government was signed and a comprehensive feasibility study will take place ahead of building a demonstration track.

Branson believes the Mumbai-Pune hyperloop route could lead to about $55 billion in economic and social benefits over a 30 year period.

The route would also link Mumbai Airport.

"We expect the high-capacity passenger and cargo hyperloop system to create tens of thousands of jobs, helping to attract new business and investment in the region. The 100% electric, efficient system will also ease severe expressway congestion and could reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 86,000 tons over 30 years," Branson said.
