Virginia vacation: Barbie, ponies and oysters

What could Barbie, ponies and oysters possibly have in common?

Read on to discover how a visit to Virginia can combine all three on a memorable family break.

As the new Barbie movie makes waves in the U.S., UK, Australia and globally, visitors to Virginia can now meet two of the pop culture icons more science-oriented sisters.

New to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center located near Dulles International Airport, are two of the world’s most accomplished astronauts.

They want to help girls to reach for the stars

Two Space Discovery Barbies that flew to the International Space Station in 2022 are now on display at the Center – an annex of the Washington D.C.-based Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

Many around the globe are familiar with another classic childhood favorite, best-selling novel Misty of Chincoteague

The story is rooted in truth, documenting the tale of a little foal named Misty from Chincoteague, Virginia.

The Chincoteague pony holds a special place in Virginia’s history.

These resilient ponies have roamed the marshes and beaches of Chincoteague Island for centuries

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin recently signed legislation designating the Chincoteague pony as Virginia’s state pony.

It recognizes the pony’s cultural significance.

Sighting the pony is easy with a visit to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge or a boat tour on the Island with operators like Cowboy Cruise Company.

Ponies are just one of Virginia’s natural wonders

Chincoteague is on Virginiaߣs Eastern Shore, which wraps around Chesapeake Bay, making it super easy to combine a pony adventure with a trip along Virginiaߣs Oyster Trail.

In honor of National Oyster Day, August 5 and National Oyster Week, August 1-6, here are some ways you can sample oysters and give back to the Bay at the same time.

Every time you eat a Virginia farm-raised oyster you are helping Chesapeake Bay

Through the Chesapeake Bay Foundatiom Reef Restoration Project, you can help just by eating oysters at participating restaurants.

Oyster shells are scarce and they create the base for oyster reefs

Each recycled oyster shell delivered into the program can be used by the Foundation to create a new home for dozens of baby oysters, called spat.
