In the second part of the 2014 show winners of this year’s VISTA! awards for innovation in sustainable tourism will be announced.
Each week we will be showcasing three of the destinations shortlisted for this years VISTAS! and today’s three are as follows:
Koksijde is a coastal town in Flanders (Belgium) with many recreational facilities, awarded QualityCoast Gold. Nature and culture are very important for the locals. Koksijde did its best to preserve the local identity of Oostduinkerke town, and especially of the traditional horseback shrimp fishing, which is very characteristic for Koksijde.
Gozo (Malta), awarded the QualityCoast Gold, is an island that cherished its traditional landscape, towns and local identity. It is strong in organic agriculture and in eco-education programs (Eco Gozo). It hosts the world’s oldest temples listed by UNESCO. Big efforts were made to restore its valleys and to create heritage trails.
Baiona in Galicia (Spain) received the QualityCoast Gold Award in 2013. Its medieval historical center is listed by the UNESCO. Baiona has special regulations to protect water resources, natural areas and the coastline from excessive urban pressure and development. Two beaches were declared and signposted "smoke-free", the first in Galicia.
