The new year is looking set to be an exciting one for Michigan, visitors to The Great Lake State will be treated to a wide array of new hotels and attractions opening in 2015, make a splash with the Penguins at Detroit Zoo and walk like an Egyptian with King Tut.

It’s great news if you are looking for somewhere new to stay in Michigan in 2015, with a variety of new hotels opening across the State.  Michigan’s first ‘aloft’ hotel is now open in downtown Detroit in the historic David Whitney Building. Several hotels will also open in the Lansing area this year, including Residence Inn by Marriott, Hyatt Place Lansing Eastwood and Fairfield Inn and Suites.

The Sea Life Michigan Aquarium opened on 29 January at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills. Measuring 35,000sq feet the aquarium has more than 5,000 aquatic creatures, including an exhibit highlighting the Great Lakes. It also includes a 180-degree underwater tunnel to see the fish swimming all around, and an interactive touch-pool to feel animals like starfish and sea snails. The Discovery of King Tut Exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum opens in 2015. Featuring more than 1,000 scientifically produced recreations hand-crafted by Egyptian artisans, The Discovery of King Tut recreates the awe and marvel of the moment of discovery. Visitors enter an overwhelming treasure trove to have an unbelievable glimpse into the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century: Tutankhamun’s tomb.  Learn more http://www.grpm.org/kingtut/

The Detroit Zoo will open a new, $21 million Penguinarium in late 2015. The 24,000sq foot centre will be the largest centre in the nation dedicated to penguins. One of the most dramatic features of the penguins’ new home will be a chilled 326,000-gallon, 25-foot-deep area with views above and below water. This will allow visitors to observe penguins dive under water – something that is impossible to see in the wild. For more information http://www.detroitzoo.org/

Note to Editors:

The State of Michigan is a state blessed with the riches of unspoiled nature: the world’s longest freshwater coastline, lakes that feel like oceans, shimmering beaches, miles and miles of cherry orchards, glorious sunrises and sunsets, daytime skies of the deepest blue, nighttime skies scattered with stars.

Home to more than 100 public beaches, some of the highest freshwater sand dunes in the world, stunning multi-colored sandstone cliffs, two National Lakeshores and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron. More than 100 lighthouses, numerous maritime museums, ten shipwreck-diving preserves and historic military fortifications rim Michigan’s Great Lakes shoreline.

Lakes, campgrounds, wildlife refuges and 99 Michigan state parks and recreation areas create a wide variety of recreational pursuits. Rivers for water sports, and thousands of miles of hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails thread their way among some 100 species of trees.

Long days, relaxing weather and more than 800 pristine Michigan courses make for the perfect tee time. Because being able to play all day is Pure Michigan.
