Wales coastal path to open
Longest continuous path around a country flagship tourism product
May 5 will see the opening of the 870 miles of the Wales Coast Path. The path will provide a continuous walking route around the whole of Wales – from the outskirts of Chester in the north to Chepstow in the south.
It is as near to the coast as legally and physically practicable, whilst fully taking into account the needs of health and safety, land management and conservation.
The path will wind through 870 miles (1,400 km) of coastal landscape – from the outskirts of Chester in the north to Chepstow in the south east. The journey will take walkers from the mouth of the River Dee, along the north Wales coast with its seaside towns, over the Menai Strait onto the Isle of Anglesey, from the LlÅ·n Peninsula down the sweep of Cardigan Bay, through Britain’s only coastal National Park in Pembrokeshire, along miles of sand, via Gower, along the waterfront of Cardiff Bay and Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, to the market town of Chepstow.
The whole path will be accessible to walkers and, where practical, some sections will also be suitable for cyclists, families with pushchairs, people with restricted mobility and horse riders.
The Welsh Government’s commitment to delivering the Wales Coast Path has the following key objectives:
- To encourage and enable the public, both locals and visitors, to enjoy the coastline of Wales.
- To encourage and enable more people to enjoy physical recreation at the coast, thus helping in efforts to become a fitter, healthier nation.
- To make coastal access a ‘flagship’ tourism product, thus bringing economic benefit to coastal communities.
For marketing purposes the path will be split into eight geographical areas:
- North Wales Coast & Dee Estuary (see North Wales Path)
- Isle of Anglesey (see Anglesey Coastal Path)
- Menai, LlÅ·n & Meirionnydd (see LlÅ·n Coastal Path)
- Ceredigion (see Ceredigion Coast Path)
- Pembrokeshire (see Pembrokeshire Coast Path)
- Carmarthenshire
- Gower & Swansea Bay
- South Wales Coast & Severn Estuary
