Walt Disney World confirms 11,000 job losses

Saturday, 02 Nov, 2020 0

Walt Disney World confirmed more than 11,000 unionized workers will be laid off at the end of the year.

In a filing posted by Jim Bowden, Disney’s Vice President of Employee Relations, 11,350 cast members will go, along with 447 employees from Disney resorts.

These are part of earlier announced company-wide layoffs of 28,000 that Walt Disney Co announced recently due to the decline in travel demand and the continued closure of Disneyland in California.

About two-thirds of layoffs are part-time positions.

Walt Disney World also laid off 720 actors and singers last week.

The latest numbers are in addition to more than 6,000 non-unionized job losses already announced.

"As with the rest of our phased reopening, we will also consider the guidance of health officials and government agencies in determining when the time will be right to adjust capacity, and as soon as it is appropriate, we will start to bring additional entertainment back," Disney said in a website message.

Disney World reopened in July after a three-month closure but the company’s California parks remain closed.
