WestJet airline acquisition of Sunwing set for green light
WestJet’s planned airline acquisition of Sunwing Airlines is set to be approved.
According to local media the Canadian government has given its support and will likely approve the transaction.
The federal government could announce it today.
Westjet first announced plans for the airline acquisition a year ago.
The deal would include tour operator brand Sunwing Vacations.
Sunwing is owned by the Hunter family.
Canada’s competition watchdog voiced concerns about the lessening of competition on some vacation routes.
The deal could be conditional on Westjet giving up some slots or other concessions.
The Competition Bureau said the two companies collectively had a 72% share of sunshine vacation routes out of Western Canada.
