WestJet: third parties should help pay flight compensation
WestJet Airlines’ boss says other third parties should chip in and help pay passenger compensation when flights are cancelled or disrupted.
Under Canada’s upcoming air passenger bill of rights, airlines are on the hook for costs, even when other service providers may be partly at fault.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech says long immigration lines could cause delays or when baggage handling machines break down.
Von Hoensbroech wants the government to provide a system where airlines can bill third party contractors to recover some of the costs.
Putting the burden entirely on airlines will cause airfares to rise, he said.
