What’s Happening in the Great Lakes

Tuesday, 13 Feb, 2024 0

The Great Lakes make up the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world and one of the world’s greatest natural treasures.

Comprising the mid-west states of Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the region is home to big cosmopolitan cities, sweeping landscapes, and small lakeside communities.

Here are some of the key events happening in each state in 2024:

Ohio

Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky launches the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster this summer. Top Thrill 2 is a record-breaking, next generation motorsport machine that races a course unlike any other. Sleek, aerodynamic vehicles launch you not once, not twice, but three times in an epic competition to reach the finish line. The third launch rockets you forward at 120 mph, sending you on a race to the stratosphere before reaching the finish line. Opening Summer 2024. https://www.cedarpoint.com/new-in-2024

Pennsylvania

The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and kicks off the second phase of the Pop District initiative, which will feature new venue construction. Starting May 17, there will be an entire weekend of celebrations centered around the 30th Anniversary Gala, which will take place on May18. A new exhibition, KAWS + Warhol, will run from May 18 to January 20 2025. This is the first exhibition to examine the dark themes present in the work of both artists. From skulls to car crashes, both artists deploy their signature bright colours and pop culture references while also presenting the lurid spectacle of death. The dark undercurrents in the work of KAWS and Warhol are magnified and brought into plain sight by presenting the two artists together for the first time. www.warhol.org

Illinois

The multi-sensory experience, which incorporates leading drone technologies along with impressive aerial shots and first-person narratives, will showcase the city from perspectives never seen before. From climbing skyscrapers 13,000 ft. high to diving straight down buildings, skimming sidewalks, into iconic landmarks to floating through fireworks and more, this experience will be the first of its kind. www.experienceflyover.com/chicago

Minnesota

This interactive, educational and recreational centre in Crosslake, Minnesota will be a national destination for nature-lovers and conservationists. It aims to restore and protect loon breeding habitats, enhance responsible recreation, and serve as a national leader in advancing loon and freshwater research. www.nationallooncenter.org

Wisconsin

For the first time since 2015, the Milwaukee Mile will host an IndyCar Series race. Taking place August 30-September 1, the Milwaukee Mile 250 will bring the best IndyCar drivers in the world to the Cream City for Milwaukee’s first NTT IndyCar Series doubleheader. Michigan
