What’s new in Wanaka 2006
In true celebrity makeover style, Wanaka has received a multi million dollar facelift and an expansive mountain augmentation for visitors viewing pleasure.
That’s right snow fans; whether skier or boarder, lodger or après extraordinaire, a new and improved Wanaka awaits your approval for the 2006 winter season.
Snow Park has invested over 5 million in base facilities and slope modifications, including a new restaurant and bar which boasts NZ’s first high altitude backpackers sleeping 44 people. Luxury apartments are also part of this development and each one features its own private hot tub on the balcony. Great spectating from the deck of the restaurant of all the action at the park.
Treble Cone’s NZ$1.5million mountain enhancements have improved on beginner and intermediate terrain by widening as well as lengthening the groomed trails. Snowmaking has also been increased in capacity by 50% on the lower mountain, complimenting the natural snowfall and ensure good snow base for late June season opening.
Cardrona on the other hand has received a total body overhaul with NZ$4 million spent on infrastructure, including snowmaking, extended children’s facilities and a new High Performance Centre for the more advanced mountain dwellers.
Keeping the mountain family friendly has always been a prerogative at Cardrona and this year is no exception. Little tykes will be as impressed as Mum and Dad when they discover that the Children’s Alpine Centre has been expanded with even more areas to play after carving up the mountain. The new centre will be the fourth part of the facility for kids and will cater for 7-12 year olds.
Treble Cone is also keeping the little tykes at bay with extended programmes for children and teens, now offering a full days fun for the first time- minus the old folks of course. Mum and Dad can drop the kids and hit the powder between 10:30am and 3:30pm every day; lunch is even taken care of.
Snow Park is putting even greater emphasis on first time park users. With more snowmaking on our beginner and intermediate terrain will see big changes to our 3 beginner parks. Our infamous Triple jump line will be open earlier thanks to some serious earth works. On top of this we have built the worlds first man made cliff drop.
Cadet adventurers of the slopes will love to hear that Cardrona’s 2006 season sees a new purpose built beginners terrain park for skiers and boarders wanting to ride the rails and jumps for the first time, providing a safe and easy introduction to the freestyle world. This is on top of the two terrain parks for the more experienced.
Treble Cone’s new permanent terrain park is also completing earthworks for the first time ever. Purpose built jumps, bumps and grinds will be at any rebel’s disposal all winter long, keeping it real even in the early part of the Wanaka ski season.
Not to be out done, Wanaka’s après ski facilities have been given a lift any darling would gawk over. From lavish luxury to local b & b’s, Wanaka has 15 new types of accommodation that cater to all snow junkies. As well as the usual mod-cons some accommodations boast open air hot pools, giving those well earned aches and pains a truly euro makeover.
With cosmetic improvements galore, the new Wanaka is the place to be seen this snow season.
