Where will the Tiger have its lair?
Normally the best policy would be to run as fast as one could away from a tiger, but it appears that Australian airports, States and Territories are running right into the mouth of the Tiger, vying to win the domestic Australian HQ location and routes for the latest aviation entrant into domestic aviation.
The only real low cost carrier to enter the Aussie market, the Singapore backed and headquartered carrier currently flies into Darwin and Perth, but CEO Tony Davies would not reveal the routes which the airline would launch with on its entry in to Aus, also keeping his cards very close to his chest about where Tiger might be based in Australia, although he did say that he was impressed with the number of approaches that had been made.
With the carrier planning to have at least five Airbus A320 aircraft flying in Australia by the end of the year and focussing on volume not yield, comments made by Mr Davies indicated that economies of scale that the airline already enjoyed with its current operation would be extended to the Australian operation, suggesting that maintenance, call centres and core administration would be overseas.
It is also known that discussions have taken place with Melbourne Airport which is among several Australian cities being considered by Tiger, but it is expected that Tullamarine will face a battle with Avalon Airport, currently handling Jetstar, not only to secure Tiger’s HQ, but also as the location for Melbourne flights.
Brisbane, home to Virgin Blue is also known to have entered the race.
