Japan’s prowess as a technology powerhouse is well known ocumented and now plans to take connectivity to a whole new level.
Beginning today, it is offering high altitude Wi-Fi to trekkers at the summit of 12,000 feet high Mt Fuji.
Wi-Fi stations have been installed at the summit and at other points on the mountain, available until mid-September with officials encouraging trekkers to share experiences on the web and social media.
Wi-Fi will also help trekkers keep abreast of any safety issues such as adverse weather conditions on the mountain, an official said.
"We hope people will use the service not only to tell about the attractions of Mount Fuji to people abroad but also to obtain weather and other information to ensure their safety," a local tourism office spokesman said.
Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures will begin distributing brochures at the climbing stations of the mountain giving tourists login details for Wi-Fi services.
The mountain attracts more than 50,000 hikers a year.
