Win for tourism as Bermuda overturns same-sex marriage ban
Bermuda could be soon back on the map for LGBT travelers after the Supreme Court overturned a much criticized ban on same-sex marriage.
It ruled against the newly enacted domestic partnership law which had earlier repealed marriage equality in Bermuda.
The ruling effectively makes Bermuda the only nation to grant marriage equality twice.
It also likely paves the way for renewed interest in travel to Bermuda as the initial repeal of the law had sparked calls for a travel boycott.
The Bermuda Tourism Authority has spoken of ‘negative international headlines and growing social media hostility towards Bermuda’ after the government repealed marriage equality late last year.
"The Bill poses an unnecessary threat to the success of our tourism industry. We are convinced it will result in lost tourism business for Bermuda," Kevin Dallas, CEO of the Tourism Authority said at the time.
Carnival Cruise Line, which has several ships under a Bermudan flag of convenience, was forced to end same sex wedding packages and was also a target of social media ire.
The line opposed the ban and provided financial support to OUTBermuda which filed a lawsuit challenging the government.
OUTBermuda called it a ‘historic decision by our Supreme Court and its recognition that all Bermuda families matter.’
