Winner- New Zealand Tourism Awards -2005
Awaroa Lodge has won the prestigious New Zealand Tourism Award for “Innovation in Eco Tourism”.
Situated at the top of the South Island in the Abel Tasman National Park, Awaroa Lodge’s award winning entry is as a result of their investment and dedication to many ecological innovations including a unique organic waste system which in turn creates its own organic garden providing fresh vegetables and herbs to the restaurant.
The meticulously planned and researched system has achieved significant savings in fuel, labour and food costs and has contributed to the ongoing protection and enhancement of the pristine and unspoilt natural environment in which the lodge is situated.
The lodge has been through a major repositioning in the past 2 years with a $8 million dollar make over which included upgrading of the restaurant and bar area, the addition of 12 new luxury suites plus a conference and function facility.
Allan Forsdick, General Manager of Awaroa said “This is an exciting journey, balancing the demands of protecting the environment with those of running a tourism business demands a true partnership between commerce, the community and nature. In New Zealand there is no other lodge of this size, in a location like this, doing what we are doing. There is a real sense that Awaroa is setting new benchmarks, breaking new ground and our guests from throughout the world are incredibly receptive to what they are able to experience here.”
The lodge now boasts 3 different accommodation types with 26 rooms in total and is host each year to both local and international visitors. Access to the lodge is via the Abel Tasman track, or kayak or water taxi. The lodge also has its own airstrip for light plane and helicopter transfers.
Winning this prestigious award is a huge bonus for the lodge and reflects the investment by owners and staff in this unique and exquisitely beautiful New Zealand icon.
