Winter Arrives Early at Hotham
Early snowfall has blanketed Hotham in the last 24 hours, with up to 7cms falling across the resort. The overnight temperature plummeted to -4.4 in what has been a mid-winter snap for Victoria’s highest resort.
Coming on the back of 2cms of snow that fell on the weekend, this is the first significant fall for 2006, boding fantastic things for the upcoming winter. There is now only 2 months until the snow season starts, which officially opens on June 10.
Light snow is continuing to fall as of this moment, and is expected to continue today and for most of Friday. In a huge pre-season boost for all snow fans, temperatures will continue to stay very cold, with the gauge predicted to stay in the minus’s all day.
“Snow at the resort at this early stage in the year is very promising,” said Justin Downes, CEO of Hotham Skiing Company. “The team at Hotham are eagerly anticipating the snow season to start, where a new range of exciting guest service initiatives and developments will be unveiled.”
Almost all signs point to an extremely strong snow season, some more scientific than others. The ‘La Nina’ weather system is currently in effect, predicted to bring a colder, wetter winter for Victoria. Lake Eyre is also full for the first time since 2000, another factor that is said to be a key indicator of snowfall in Australia. Weather predictor John Moore also forecasts both an early and strong winter season this year.
Mr Downes went on to add that interest in bookings has been extremely strong. “The switchboard at Hotham Holidays has been operating at blizzard pace. This new snowfall has certainly added to the interest.”
