With ‘chronic’ pilot shortage, Rex cuts regional flights

A ‘chronic’ pilot shortage has forced Australia regional carrier Rex Airlines to slash flights on nine regional routes.

It is cutting flights across four states from 1 May.

These include to Cairns, Bamaga, Broken Hill, Wagga Wagga and Mount Gambier.

As well as the pilot shortage it also cities engineer and aircraft parts shortages.

It affects Rex’s large fleet of Saab 340 Turboprop planes.

“These adjustments are necessitated by the chronic shortage of airline professionals, particularly pilots and engineers,” said Warrick Lodge, GM of network strategy. .

“We pledge to reinstate the services once the situation has stabilised.”

The Mildura-Adelaide service will be grounded altogether.

Another four routes will have their timings changed.
