World Buskers Festival in NZ
Christchurch’s 2006 World Buskers Festival promises the most comprehensive multi-venue programme ever staged and is again expected to draw record numbers of spectators from Thursday 19 January through to Sunday 29 January.
Christchurch is one of the world’s top 10 Buskers Festivals, behind famous events in Linz, Austria; Edinburgh, Scotland and Halifax, Canada. It attracts large numbers of overseas acts and visitors to the city.
Festival Director, Jodi Wright says the Festival’s reputation for excellence and great locations in the heart of Christchurch’s cultural and heritage precinct is a big drawcard for international and domestic visitors, as well as for local residents.
“Like our city, the Festival is easily accessible to visitors and residents. It makes it so simple for them to be entertained and enjoy a holiday here. They don’t have to do a huge amount of planning or any ticket buying in advance, and it’s easy to extend their stay if they want to see more of our acts, and the city,” she said.
Regional Tourism Organisation, Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing in conjunction with Pacific Blue, is hosting a contingent of Australian media to attend this year’s event. CCM’s General Manager Marketing Chris Griffin says the festival attracts international interest in Christchurch, and it has reinforced the city’s reputation as a holiday destination both domestically and across the Tasman.
“The Festival exemplifies the diversity and the fun nature of Christchurch city. It showcases some of our best venues and makes use of the city’s excellent layout. But better still the International Buskers Festival attracts an increasingly discerning and sophisticated traveller to our city” he said.
Full details of the venues, acts and performance schedules are available online (http://www.worldbuskersfestival.com) and in the 40 page Festival programme and available from the i-SITE visitors’ centre in Cathedral Square, Christchurch City Council service centres and libraries.
