Canada will soon roll out X-rated passports.
The ‘X’ in question will be applicable for ‘gender neutral’ travelers, who can simply mark ‘X’ on the passport instead of ‘M’ or ‘F’ (male or female).
Gender neutral passports have been long advocated by transgender activists and travelers can start using the ‘X’ gender designation from August 31.
"All Canadians should feel safe to be themselves, live according to their gender identity and express their gender as they choose. By introducing an "X" gender designation in our government-issued documents, we are taking an important step towards advancing equality for all Canadians regardless of gender identity or expression," said immigration minister Ahmed Hussen.
Earlier this year the federal government announced a change was likely after justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould hinted a third option was under discussion.
Then Parliament passed a bill adding gender identity and gender expression under the Canadian Human Rights Act.
Other countries offering a ‘X’ designation on passports include Australia, Denmark, Germany and New Zealand.
