Zombies sell travel to Georgia
Georgia is relying on zombies to carry its tourism message to travelers everywhere.
The tourism board has published two versions of its multi-page 2013 magazine guidebook. One features Atlanta-based country musician Zac Brown and the other stars zombies from the AMC television thriller, "The Walking Dead" which is filmed in the Georgia city of Senoia.
Senoia, 25 miles south of Atlanta, is no stranger to film stardom. It was also the site of the films "Driving Miss Daisy," "Fried Green Tomatoes," and "Sweet Home, Alabama" (in this case, Georgia), among many others.
Tourism board use of entertainment brands to sell destinations is not new. VisitBritain has several former entertainment executives (and even once had a star of "Braveheart") on its personnel roster in its pursuit of what is sometimes called the "set-jetting" dollar.
In New York, several major tour companies run film and TV tours where travelers can follow in the footsteps of Carrie from "Sex in the City."
Now with the "Walking Dead" in Georgia, zombie fans have a place of pilgrimage all their own.
