AAA forecasts huge decline in Thanksgiving air travel
Far fewer Americans are likely to travel by air for the Thanksgiving holidays this year.
AAA Travel is predicting more than 50 million will travel but that comprises a big decline in those taking flights.
About 2.4 million are expected to travel by air, AAA says, which is a drop of more than 47% on last year.
"The decision to travel is a personal one. For those who are considering making a trip, the majority will go by car, which provides the flexibility to modify holiday travel plans up until the day of departure," said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.
It expects 47.8 million will go by car, accounting for 95% of all holiday travel.
Based on last month’s data, average gas prices nationally are at their lowest level in more than 15 years.
Overall, it predicts a 10% drop in total Thanksgiving trips made.
Just 353,000 are likely to take other modes of transport like buses and trains, which is down more than 75%.
