Air Canada may launch scheduled flights from Toronto to Atlantic City soon airport officials say.
Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Atlantic City’s airport said talks with the airline are ongoing.
"We’re talking to Air Canada. Stay tuned," he said.
If Air Canada decides to start flights, it will become only the second scheduled carrier at the airport, after United Airlines pulled out in December after just a few months of service.
Port Authority officials said the state Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has agreed to subsidize the service with $705,000 a year.
Air Canada will initially serve Atlantic City four days a week seasonally and may also add departures from Montreal if there is sufficient demand officials said.
"Canadians are already coming down to the Jersey Shore. This will bring even more of them here," said Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian.
"I think the old days of Canadians coming down here and spending 10 days are gone," Guardian said.
"If you can save one or two days of travel time by flying instead of driving, this air service should be good and younger people are looking for shorter trips. This service will be geared toward the millennials."
In the past, WestJet flew the Toronto-Atlantic City route but ended the service in 2010 due to weak demand.
