Air NZ boss appeals to Wellington leaders
Air New Zealand boss Rob Fyfe spent yesterday lobbying in Wellington to convince political and business leaders that a proposed trans-Tasman code-share agreement with Qantas is necessary.
The airlines want to combine their trans-Tasman services in a bid to cut costs and return the route to break-even.
But Wellington leaders have come out strongly in opposition to the plan. They say it would give the two airlines a near monopoly out of the capital, and the reduction in flight numbers would hamper tourism growth.
The airlines are also demanding that the Government allow the Commerce Commission to decide whether to approve the deal or not.
Mr Fyfe spoke to members of the Chamber of Commerce and its board, and met Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast.
